Why We Shoot on RED Cinema Cameras (and When We Don’t)

Most of our commercials and brand films are shot on RED digital cinema cameras, including the Komodo and V-Raptor. Clients sometimes ask why it matters what camera we use. Here’s the plain-language version: what RED gives us, how we work with it, what resolution actually buys you, and when a different camera, or even a phone, is the right call.

Why RED

Slow motion without compromise

RED cameras shoot at high frame rates at high resolution, which is how we get clean, cinematic slow motion. Just as useful, we can shoot one take at normal speed, reset, and shoot it again in slow motion, then cut between the two without changing the clip in post.

Low light

Some RED sensors are built to handle dim rooms and natural light after sunset without the image turning grainy. That lets us shoot real locations as they are, instead of flooding every space with lights.

Color that holds up in the edit

RED records in REDCODE RAW, which keeps far more image information than a typical video file. In post, an editor can change color temperature, adjust exposure or move to a log image for a colorist to grade from scratch. If something was set slightly wrong on the day, it can usually be fixed rather than lived with.

A camera built for the job

RED cameras are modular. The core, called the brain, records the image; lenses, monitors, power and accessories are added around it. We build the camera for the shot: compact and light for a gimbal or a car rig, fully built out for a studio interview.

How we work with RED

• **Plan first.** Shot lists and storyboards decide resolution, frame rate and lenses before we roll.
• **Set up to the project.** Resolution, frame rate and compression are matched to where the footage will end up.
• **Protect the media.** RED files are large, so cards are backed up on set and labeled by scene and take.
• **Monitor properly.** Exposure, focus and framing are checked on professional monitors in real time.
• **Grade from RAW.** Color grading starts from the full RAW file, then each version is exported for broadcast, streaming or social.

Do you need 8K?

8K doubles the width and height of a 4K image, so it has four times the pixels of 4K and sixteen times the pixels of 1080p HD. Very few viewers will ever watch your video in 8K, and most streaming and social platforms deliver less than that anyway.

Extra resolution is still useful on set: it lets an editor reframe a shot, punch in for a close-up, or stabilize footage without losing quality in the final 4K or HD delivery. The rule we follow is to choose capture resolution for what the edit needs, and delivery resolution for where people will watch.

Can a phone replace a cinema camera?

For some jobs, yes. Phone cameras are excellent for quick social posts, behind-the-scenes clips and anything where speed matters more than polish. Side-by-side tests have shown phone footage looking great on a phone screen and falling apart on a large display, mostly because of heavy in-camera sharpening and processing.

A cinema camera gives you interchangeable lenses, real control over depth of field, more dynamic range and files that can be graded properly. If the video will run on TV, on a big screen or as the centerpiece of your brand, it’s worth the step up.

The right tool for the shot

RED isn’t the answer to every job. We also shoot on Canon cinema cameras when a project calls for them, and choose gear based on where the video will run, who it’s for and how long it needs to last.
